I didn't get that he was saying that Esera was afraid to come home. I got that he was saying that this biting hatred of gay people is unnecessary. It drives walls between people that do not need to be there. Reading your words (sammy) it sounds like someone hurt you at some point. There are good and bad people of all types and creeds. To me the experience of god is healing. When I feel close to god I sence no limit to divine understanding and love. I do not sence any hatred. In the end your anger and spite is going to keep you from having that special "healing" relationship with god. If you pass it on to others, including your children then you are allowing who ever hurt you to hurt them as well.
