I was watching TV the other night with my partner, Greg, when the commercial for Chili's came on. It's the commercial that features Esera playing ukelele and singing about how wonderful the Chili's Hawaiian steak is. And I shook Greg's shoulder and said, "Greg, look! That's Esera Tuaolo! That's the Samoan pro football player who CAME OUT OF THE CLOSET last year." We think it's just wonderful that Chili's would have him in a commercial like that, NOT necessarily because's he's Gay, but because he's handsome and smiling and can play ukelele and sing! How cool is THAT?
As for ourselves, Greg & I are big guys, and we both work out a lot, and there have been a few times that people have asked us if we are a couple of football players, and we have to say, "No, we're just a couple!" We deeply admire Esera for having the courage to come out. Coming out is something that Straight people have nothing in life to compare to. It's probably the most difficult and personally momentous decision that any Gay person can make. And now just look at Esera today! He's got a wonderful spouse, two lovely kids, he's doing commercials and also helps out with the Human Rights Campaign. Any Samoan, Gay or Straight, ought to be very proud of him. We sure are.
