Friday 27th March - Samoa - Upolu

We drove to the Rainforest Ecolodge just outside Apia and spent an hour or so wandering around their botanical gardens. It was very interesting seeing the range of plants and trees that grow in Samoa, but the main problem with the gardens is the fact there is no labeling or descriptions of the plants.

In the afternoon we checked out of Aggies and dropped the car back at Apia Rentals. Emma picked us up and took us back to Loluemoega via Fa’asito’o.

Later that evening Faasitoo turned up with a huge umu, it turned out to be 30kg, for us to take to New Zealand. We also had a smaller umu and a box of nui from Lolumoega. When we turned up at the aiport we found that our suitcase weighed 40kg and that there is a limit of 30kg per item, so we had to repack at the airport. Our total luggage including the umu came in at over 100kg and so we were expecting a very hefty excess baggage charge. Fortuneately Lucy’s aunt knew someone who worked at the airport, and this combined with the fact that the plane was only a third full meant that we got away without paying any excess.
