Monday 23rd March - Samoa - Upolu
We drove to
the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum and took the short trail, half and hour, up Mt. Vaea to
Robert Louis Stevenson's Grave. It is a reasonably steep climb and we required frequent
breaks as we ascended because it is a very hard climb in the hot and humid conditions.
When we reached the top where we had an excellent view over Apia, we were greeted by a
large number of mosquitos, so only stayed a short while. We took the long trail, 45
minutes, back down and when we arrived at the museum I had to buy a new tee-shirt because
the one I was wearing was wringably soaked. They consensus seems to be that you should
climb Mt. Vaea in the very early morning and be on the summit to see the Sun rise and only
fools like us climb it in the middle of the day.
We then continued along the cross island road, stopping to look at the
alien structure that is the Bahai temple, and continued on to the Togitogina Falls. These
were a bit of a disapointment because they had very little water in them. However the
Sopoaga Falls were very impresive, falling about 200 feet over cliffs, covered in
vegetation. We then headed back to Apia via the impressive Le Mafa Pass, where the view
from the central mountains out over the coastal plain to the reef is spectacular. |
