Friday 20th March - Samoa - Savai'i

We changed money at the PCB bank in Vaisala and then headed back to Asau. It seems that small towns in Samoa are like small towns everywhere. There were two employees at the bank, the young man who was serving us, and wanted to find out as much about us as he could, and the women serving the customer to our left. She spent the whole time scrutinizing us, even as she served and spoke to her customer her eyes were fixed on us. Perhaps we bore a striking resemblance to a gang of bank robbers, but I suppose after the banks in the Solomon Islands it is a pleasure to meet staff that are not uncivil and ill-mannered.

We drove back into Asau to take a look at the wharf. The Lonely Planet mentions something about turtles swimming at the harbour in Asau, but after spending half an hour and not even seeing a fish through the thick murky green water we gave up. We were surprised to see that there was an airport at Asau. It reopened last year after the previous runway was washed away into the lagoon during a hurricane. Apparently there is one flight in a day, from Fagali’i, at 3:00pm every day.

We spent the rest of the day swimming, snorkelling and lounging about in the sun.

In the evening, after we had eaten another good meal, the hotel put on their own fiafia. Although it was nowhere as polished as the Tusitala’s it was still enjoyable. There was more, unwilling, audience participation than at the Tusitala, and both of us made fools of ourselves as we attempted to siva. Fortunately we won't the only ones that couldn't dance properly.
