Monday 16th March - Samoa - Upolu

Papapapai-tai Falls along the cross island roadWe went into Apia to pick up our ticket from the Western Samoan Shipping Line. It costs 30 Tala one way and possesion of the ticket ensures you can get on the ferry to Savai'i. If you arrive at the wharf without a ticket there is no guarantee that you will be able to get on the boat. Tickets can now be obtained from the new offices next to Evening Shades just off Beach Road as you head towards the wharf in Apia.

We then headed towards the New Market and took a look at the various fruit, vegetables and other produce on display. We tried to find some CDs of Samoan music, but we couldn't find anything in the market. We ended up at a small shop opposite the Lotemau centre, and although there was not much of a choice Lucy bought three CDs, one of which was a song we had heard all across the Pacific but never at home, Non Tengo Dinaro; it's not Samoan, but it will bring back memories of the holiday.

Heading out of Apia on the Cross Island Road we visited the Papapapai-tai water falls. The viewpoint for these falls, located on the western side of the road used to be sign posted, but the post is now standing at an angle of 30 degrees and is rusted to illegibility. However there is a green shop, that was closed when we were there, on the same side as the view point. The is no dicernable route from the viewpoint to the waterfalls so you will have to be content looking at the 200 hundred foot drop from a distance of about half a mile.

There are actually three cross Island roads, one at Lolumoega, one in Apia running up through Vailima and the third which runs through thr Lemafa Pass. Each of these has to rise a couple of thousand feet very quickly from sealevel and as you drive along them you notice the drop in temperature. If you make the trip a couple of times during your stay you will notice that the weather in the centre of the island is always much worse then that on the coast. Most times we crossed the island it was either raining or there were very low clouds looming above us.
